In casting production it is state of the art to take samples from the melting or casting furnace and analyze these samples by means of a laboratory analyzer for quality assurance purposes. So far it used to be impossible to perform this analysis in-line, i.e. to determine the chemical composition of the heat during melting or casting without interrupting these processes. Now the "Quantalizer" (figure 1) has revolutionized quality control as for the first time it is possible to carry out the chemical analysis at the furnace as an in-line process control operation, enabling continuous monitoring and control of the complete melting and/or casting process. After the first ever application of Quantalizer{sup}(CLM400) at the Kleinreichen-bach foundry in Austria, the system was subjected to another challenge. The high-tech firm Innsitec Laser Technologies GmbH, Linz, Austria, made available the instrument to Aluminium Lend GmbH & Co KG for test purposes. The test operation in Lend confirmed the previously obtained excellent measurement results.
