The reflective displays, such as electronic papers, micro-electro-mechanical systems and micro-electro-optical-mechanical systems, reflective liquid-crystal displays have great advantages over the transmissive displays in terms of low power consumption, color gamut and high contrast under bright ambient illumination. However, the optical characteristics are deteriorated under dim environment. In general, a single prismatic light-guide plate (LGP) is employed in frontlight unit (FLU) to illuminate a reflective display, in spite adding optical noise to the display module. In this paper the optical characteristic of a FLU that employs functional integrated LGP, i.e. multilayer/stacked LGPs with luminance enhancing function is studied.
