I had the great good fortune to be acceptedas an Audiology Master's student at the Univer-sity of Wisconsin-Madison in the mid-1970s.Ray Karlovich and Terry Wiley provided me withan excellent foundation in acoustics and instru-mentation. Neither would accept a superficialunderstanding of the physical sciences from theirAudiology students-they wanted us to under-stand the theoretical and computational bases ofthe relevant physical sciences, so we could applythis understanding to each patient we saw in theclinic.
