Editorial Commentary: Esophageal Complications: What are the Real Results?

Dr Molena and colleagues query the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program to determine the incidence of and the risk factors for respiratory complications after esophagectomy. They report that 23% (687 of 2945) of patients had respiratory complications of pneumonia (5.9%), unplanned intubation (9.9%), and ventilator dependency >48 hours (13.8%). They compared the groups with or without these complications and found higher mortality, morbidity, reoperative rates, and length of stay in the patients with respiratory compromise. Multiple risk factors were associated with complications.
