Literacy skills have always been crucial to learning science (Liftig 2015), but the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) now specifically require literacy to be incorporated into science instruction. Today's middle school science educators are not only charged with teaching complex academic vocabulary and concepts, but also with improving students' language skills within the context of science (Thier 2010). It is no longer enough to teach students to apply new vocabulary to the curriculum; students must now also store these words in their long-term memory for future use in high school and college.
