The transition from columnar to equiaxed dendrites during solidification of metals and alloys is well documented and continues to receive attention [1-20]. Understanding this phenomenon is important from a materials properties point of view as a casting's microstructure is generally preferred to be either fully aligned or to consist of uniformly sized and distributed grains.
