AN UPGRADING OF THE OBSOLETE THICKNESS GAUGE

Cold Rolling Mill of PT KRAKATAU STEEL produces CRC with thickness which varies from 0.20 mm to 3.00 mm. The strip thickness quality is one of the main aspects, to satisfy our customers. Strip thickness measurement using Non Contact Methods has been used widely in Steel Industry. A radioisotope source type of Americium 241, ion chambering detector and set of processing modules are components of the thickness gauge. Computer programming is needed to convert radiation attenuation to the strip thickness. Some of processing modules are no longer supplied by the manufacturer, because of the obsolesce reason. To anticipate the obsolete part, we have been successful in developing a software for thickness measurement, which is run in Single Board Computer Platform. The new software features are easier and faster to calibrate, produces more accurate result and user-friendly operator dialog. The Software had been tested in Off-Line mode and in On-Line mode for thickness feed back control, in both case, the result obtained are very satisfied We are going to prepare for replacing hardware part to PC-based - mP Pentium and Windows Platform, to get fully Open Connectivity System and Web-based Instrumentation, in the near future.
