I admit that "employee engagement" wasn't even a blip on my radar until I started reading about companies in and around the recycling industry getting recognized for their accomplishments in that area. Sims Metal Management (New York), for instance, earned an Employee Engagement Award for the North America region from ORC International (Princeton, N.J.), while Achievers (San Francisco) recognized Alcoa (New York) as one of the 50 Most Engaged Workplaces in the United States for the second consecutive year. These announcements made me curious to learn about employee engagement and understand why companies should care. It turns out they should care because engaged employees-or the lack thereof-can have a huge effect on their bottom line.
