I've attended the opening-day game of the Chicago White Sox for more than 35 years. Opening day is like a holiday for me-my favorite holiday, in fact (sorry, Santa). One year, while attending the game, I called the office to check in with my staff. The phone rang and rang, but no one answered. When I finally reached one of my employees on her cell phone, I learned that no one answered because no one was there. The staff had closed the company's doors early. It seems they wanted to enjoy my holiday, too. I learned a couple of lessons that day: One, be specific in communicating the expected protocol while I'm away from the office; and two, employees follow the leader. Opportunity knocked, and my staff answered the door.
