How did you enter the recycling business? My great aunt and uncle started Biltmore Iron & Metal Co. in 1951, and my father and one of his cousins bought the company in 1961. I grew up in the business, visiting my dad at work, having lunch with him, and attending ISIS [an ISRI predecessor] and ISRI meetings with my parents. I decided early on that I had no desire to work at the scrapyard, which I viewed as a dirty, scary place. So I went to Anderson University in Anderson, S.C., where I earned a music degree in piano performance. I soon realized I couldn't make a living as a classical pianist, and instead I began working with developmentally delayed children at a North Carolina state agency.
