New Zealand has been a pioneer in managing its coastal resources and fisheries. Decisions about ivhere marine reserves should be located, or quota management lor fish species, will always remain controversial, but the majority of New Zealanders seem to stronyiy support the piesoivation and sustainable management of our coastal marine space and our entire Exclusive Economic Zone- irEZ) Tertiary education for those working on the sea, working in aquaculture, researching, and managing New Zealand's marine resources, is now obligatory in one form or another and is a step in the right direction for ensuring preservation and longevity of our precious resources.
