Two decades of world development

In the 20 years since Seafood International was launched, world production has increased, aquaculture has boomed and new nations have arrived on the scene. Erik Hempel takes a look at FAO central statistics to give an overview of how the global seafood industry has developed. Total production (including all aquatic organisms) grew from 97.5 million tonnes in 1986 to over 155 million tonnes in 2004. Aquaculture production has grown from 12.7 million tonnes to 59.4 million tonnes.
