Also known as black kingfish, crabeater, lemonfish, prodigal son and sergeant fish, cobia (Rachycentron candum) has become the latest species in Vietnam to be the subject of a seawater aquaculture program, following on the successful heels of lobsterand grouper species. Taiwan-based NTPL, which farms 1000 tonnes of cobia annually in its home country, has invested 5 million dollar in building a farming centre in Vietnamese waters. This 950-hectare site is located off the coast of Kanh Hoa, in the Nha Trang province. NTPL director-general Kevin Chang tells Seafood International that the company chose to set up in Vietnam because it found ideal conditions for cobia farming there.
