As a sequel to various macro economic reforms by Government of India (GoI) in 1991, the technology landscape of iron & steel industry is under constant change. Globalisation of the Indianeconomy has further unleashed a situation of cost-price squeeze for the industry. To cope with the situation, the industry is trying to adjust through continuous innovation and change of direction. First COREX and now ROMELT are two such examples. In category of DRI processes, a coal based RHF process is under active consideration. The paper is a contemporary study involving tehcno economic analysis of smelting reduction (SR) processes with a focus on processes in the country. In addition, the paper also carries out techno-economic evaluation of some new generation Direct Reduction (DR) processes, which use relatively inexpensive iron or fines with natural gas or coal fines as source of thermal energy andreductant.
