Serious implications for seafood industry in'Shared Fisheries' document

The long awaited discussion document from MFish (Ministry of Fisheries) on managing New Zealand's shared fisheries was finally released on 25 October but its long development time has not resulted in a credible approach and has raised grave concerns for the industry. "This is frankly a very, very worrying document. It appears that the proposal is about reallocation away from the commercial sector, and not about managing shared fisheries sustainably at all," was New Zealand Seafood Industry Council chief executive Owen Symmans' response to the Shared Fisheries document. "We anticipate that any response may involve broad industry participation."
