In the second of his interviews with senior executives from Thailand's top tuna companies, Mike Urch talks to Poj Aramwattananont about how to counteract the increasing cost of raw material. 'If the price of tuna gets too high the consumer will moveon to other foods,' says Poj Aramwattananont, HI president of Sea Value, which claims to be the world's biggest tuna canner. The seller must modify the product, move to value-added lines, or combine the tuna element with other items to reduce the fishcontent such as the "lighter lunch to go" which includes crackers and mayonnaise . When tuna cost 400-600 dolar per tonne ten years ago we would sell more "pure" fish. Now it has risen to 900 dollar per tonne. At 1000 dollar per tonne and above, the marketer and producer have to decide what to do such as adding more items "inside".'
