I always find acquisition announcements interesting because they reflect the industry's shifting power structure. Most of the announcements are about companies I know only at arm's length, but two recent deals caught my eye because I'm more familiar with the companies-City Scrap & Salvage Co. (Akron, Ohio), which sold to The Timken Co. [Canton, Ohio), and Brenner Recycling (Hazleton, Pa.), which sold to Upstate Shredding (Owego, N.Y.). I've known Randy Katz of City Scrap and Paul Brenner of Brenner Recycling for years, and'-to be honest-I was surprised to hear they had sold their third-generation family businesses. I thought they'd remain independent forever. So I decided to ask them why they did it. This inquiring mind wanted to know.
