Tilapia — which has been regarded by many as the new and rising star of tiopical aquaculture - has continued to grow in recent years. Statistics recently published by the FAO show that total aquaculture production of tilapia in 2003 reached over 1.6million tonnes with an estimated first-hand value of more than 2 billion dollar. China alone accounts for more than 50% of the total production - in 2003, its farmed tilapia production stood at 806,000 tonnes - but most of this goes to the domestic market.
