The sheer volume of materials that pass through a recycler's gate on a daily basis can be quite substantial--and so can the amount of airborne particles and surface dust those recycling operations generate. Dust poses a variety of problems for scrapyards. Dust buildup can damage equipment, clogging filters and putting wear on engines that results in higher operating costs and more frequent downtime. Dust can be a safety hazard by impairing visibility and, in some cases, creating a risk of explosions and fire. And dust is a potential health hazard. OSHA regulates "nuisance dust" on its own, in addition to its regulations of specific materials that become hazardous when inhaled or become irritating when they come into contact with eyes and skin.
