NEW SCRAP MELTING FURNACE WITH CONTINUOUS PRE-HEATING SYSTEM

Authors have developed a new scrap melting system. The system is mainly made up of two parts: DC electric arc furnace and scrap continuous preheating system. This system has been developed aiming at the following advantages: energy saving, high productivity manpower saving, environmental improvement, and quality improvement. Energy saving: The scrap will be preheated up to 700-800oC without using burners, and we expect that the electric power consumption will be reduced to 280 kWh/ton, with carbon injection of 25 kg/ton and oxygen injection of 33 Nm3/ton. High productivity: The scrap melting period is reduced due to the efficient heal recovery, and the power off time is also reduced as the scrap is charged continuously ink the furnace. These lead us to raise the productivity of the furnace. Manpower saving: We expect that two men operation for the furnace and LF will be possible finally, adopting various kinds of automated facilities. Environmental Improvement: Dust does not scatter as the scrap is always charged in a closed system. The noise and flicker are reduced because of the stable arcing which always, occurs between the electrode and the melt. Quality Improvement: The furnace has much amount of hot heel. This means that the composition of the melt can be easily controlled, even though some foreign articles may he brought into the furnace with the scrap charged. Consequently, the quality of the melt will improve significantly, compared with conventional batch furnace.
