Epidemiological study of scoliosis of Romanian school children (E?tude e?pide?miologique de la scoliose chez les enfants roumains scolarise?s)

Introduction: The aim of this study was to carry out an epidemiological investigation about scoliosis in Romanian school children. Synthesis of the facts: Two hundred and fifty-two children, 113?boys (9.5 0.8?years; 34.7 9.7 kg; 137.7 8 cm) and 139?girls (9.5 0.8?years; 32.8 7.3 kg; 136.6 7.2 cm) were clinically assessed and radiologically investigated (Cobb angle, apical vertebral rotation). Forty-two subjects (16.6?%), 22?girls and 20?boys among all subjects had structural scoliosis of mild angulation (10-20). Girls to boys ratio in subjects presenting structural scoliosis was 1.08. Body mass, BMI and body fat were lower (p < 0,05) in girls with structural scoliosis than in girls displaying a functional scoliosis. Conclusions: A high incidence of structural scoliosis with mild angulation was found in children of the present study. Girls presenting scoliosis have a specific somatic morphologic type when compared to a normal population. This might be a valuable indication for preventive measures and subsequent therapeutic strategy. It could also be precious information for specialists involved in sport selection, especially for those searching for this specific morphotype in girls. ? 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved
