Costs soar at Aquila's West Pilbara iron ore project

The cost of developing the West Pilbara iron ore project in Western Australia has blown out by 27% to A$7.4 billion (US$7.5 billion), 50%-owner Aquila Resources said Monday. A definitive feasibility study in July 2010 had estimated a total operating and capital cost of A$5.8 billion for the project, but the Perth-based company has been indicating for some time that the final cost would be higher.
