Posco to build 200,000 t/y pipe plant in Colombia

Korean steel group Posco plans to build a pipe mill of 200,000 tonnes/year capacity to cater to growing demand for oil and natural gas transportation in Colombia. Company CEO Chung Joon-yang signed a memorandum of understanding for the project with Alberto Losada, president of Fanalca, a Colombian metal auto parts maker, on 15 September in Seoul. Demand for oil and gas linepipe in Colombia – where energy resources development is actively progressing – will surge to 200,000 t/y by 2015 compared to last year’s total demand of only 30,000 t, Posco forecasts. Colombia has been relying on imports for all of its pipe needs because there are no domestic pipe makers and demand from the neighbouring countries such as Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia are steadily growing too, it adds.
