In June 2005, I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) in Iraq sent an urgent universal needs statement to U.S. Marine Corps head-quarters. The force, along with the rest of the Corps, needed a consistent, reliable and fast way to communicate among its units. I MEF required a standard enterprise software suite to support command element Web use and the requirement for collaborative tools. More than 50 percent of Secure Internet Protocol Router Network traffic during Operations Iraqi Freedom 1 and 2 was directly attributable to Web usage at the expeditionary force and major subordinate command levels.
