Piston and piston ring failures

Piston and piston ring failures usually share common causes. Quite often, there may be a single problem. But most of the time, multiple problems develop as a result of a primary problem or condition. Troubleshooting pistons and piston rings requires some skill in analyzing engine noise and smoke, as well as evaluating the diagnostics of starting and running the engine. Consideration also needs to be given to such factors as the seasonal and environmental conditions under which the machine operates, the operation tasks the equipment is expected to perform, the service and maintenance schedules followed, and operator competency. Of course, there is always the possibility of manufacturing and parts defects, too. The machine operator's skill and ability, as well as the machine's maintenance schedules and procedures - quite often coupled with low-quality fuel and oil - are the main culprits that lead to piston and ring failure.
