The piston has a piston head (1a) facing a peripheral region of a piston shaft (1b) and made of forgeable light metal alloy. A ring carrier retains a piston ring and is connected with the piston by smithy deformation of the piston shaft and/or the piston head. The ring carrier is forged into a recess (2) of the piston shaft and/or the piston head and rotates in a circumferential direction. The ring carrier is made of a hard material and comprises an edge, and the recess comprises a radially extending step (2a), where the edge faces the piston head. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a piston.
