At first glance, it looks like a large, undeveloped Polaroid. Shine a flashlight on it and the film transforms into a three-dimensional holographic map that enables U.S. soldiers and commanders -- without 3-D glasses or goggles -- to better see the terrain in which they're operating. Any unit preparing to deploy can ask for one from an office at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan or the U.S. Army's G-2 intelligence staff. The hard-copy holograms -- about 1,200 so far -- are typically shipped to the war zones from the continental U.S., but improvements are in the works.
