The decreasing well pressure of matured oil wells tied into wellhead platforms is in many cases not sufficient to transport the well flow to a separator on the main platform. Multiphase pumps, with their ability to handle well flow with high gas content and low inlet pressure, keep these wells producing. However, offshore wellhead platforms often have no or only limited electrical supply. Multiphase pumps driven by either gas or diesel engines are used to keep these wells efficiently operating. Diesel engines are mainly used for small units.
