Role of foreign remittances in the socio economic development of NWFP: a case study of District Dir.

This study analyses the impact of migrant workers' remittances on the socioeconomic development of Dir district, Northwest Frontier province, Pakistan. It examines: the migration situation; the volume and utilization of migrants' remittances; and the investment behaviour of these migrants. For this purpose, 140 households from 25 villages were surveyed in October 2002. The findings show that the number of migrants is continuously rising, and that migrants' remittances are the mainstay of the sample households. These remittances are productively utilized and have a positive impact on the sample households as well as on the sample villages as a whole.
