GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF BROILERS ON THREONINE SUPPLEMENTED DIETS

The present study was conducted to determine threonine requirements of starting and growing broiler chicks. One hundred and twenty day-old (Hubbard) broiler chicks were randomly divided into four treatments (designated as A, B, C, and D). Each treatment comprises of 3 replicates of 10 chicks each. The experimental diets for starting and growing periods were prepared such that dietary threonine levels of 0.80, 0.85, 0.90 and 0.95 in the starting and 0.74. 0.79. 0.84 and 0.89 in the growing diets A, B,C and D respectively were achieved through supplementation of L-threonine. The results of present trial demonstrate that supplementation of L-threonine to the basal diet improves feed consumption in both starting and growing birds (P<0.05). The body weight gain remained un-altered in starting birds. The gain was improved in growing birds (P<0.05). A significant increase in feed: gain (P<0.05) in both starting and growing phases was also observed. Increasing dietary threonine level in both starting andgrowing diets affected neither dressing percentage nor relative proportion of crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) of de-boned carcass. Breast meat and abdominal fat were, however, significantly affected (P<0.05) by higher concentration of threonine. Overall the supplementation of L-threonine to the starting and growing diets over and above that of Anonymous (1994) threonine allowance does not seem to furnish any advantage.
