Relative efficacy of various insecticides for the management of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) on apple.

An experiment was conducted in apple orchards in Swat, Pakistan in 2002 to determine the relative efficacy of 5 insecticides at their recommended doses, i.e. Match 050EC (lufenuron, 0.001%), Sumi-alpha 110EC (esfenvalerate, 0.0005%), Lorsban 040EC (chlorpyrifos, 0.002%), Danitol 030EC (fenpropathrin, 0.0005%) and Steward 150SC (indoxacarb, 0.0003%), against the apple fruit borer, H. armigera. The efficacy of the insecticides was recorded based on average larval population, fruit infestation and damage, and pest mortality. The average larval population was recorded by counting the number of live larvae on randomly selected fruits and the infestation level by counting the number of infested fruits out of the total randomly selected fruits in each treatment. The percentage damage was recorded based on the number of damaged fruits per selected plant in each treatment, while the mortality was computed by using the Abott's formula. All the insecticides showed significant control of the pest at a single application. Steward 150SC proved the best, showing the minimum average larval population (0.77%), infestation (3.33%) and fruit damage (8.1%) as well as the maximum pest mortality (84.43%).
