We would like to thank Maiza and Dollfus, 2011, for their comments on our findings of differential medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) signals across task runs in persons with schizophrenia (SZ). We hypothesized that the differences observed may be due to differences in task automatization in schizophrenia (van Raalten et al, 2008). However, Maiza and Dollfus suggest that group differences across task runs may be due to greater variability of the fMRI signal in SZ across task repetitions (Manoach et al, 2001; Bennett and Miller, 2010). In their recent work (Maiza et al., 2010, 2011), this variability was associated with poor task performance and it was observed in brain regions associated with the performance of more complex cognitive tasks. Methodological differences exist between our working memory (WM) paradigm and the others cited.
