Definition of psychotic disorders in the DSM-5 too radical, too conservative, or just right!

In this issue of the journal, members of the DSM-5 Psychotic Disorders workgroup address the treatment of psychotic disorders in the DSM-5 and summarize the rationale for changes made from DSM-IV. Since the publication of DSM-IV in 1994, several limitations in its definition of psychotic disorders were recognized, and a substantial body of new data about the nature of psychotic disorders was generated. In a series of six articles, the DSM-5 workgroup members describe the major revisions in the conceptualization and characterization of psychotic disorders in DSM-5 and discuss the logic underlying these modifications. This is followed by three commentaries by schizophrenia experts from three continents - Europe, North America, and Australia - that critically review the treatment of psychotic disorders in the DSM-5.
