Ofcom draw attention to 4G network interference with digital television reception

The roll-out of fourth generation (4G) mobile telephone communications technology has already begun and great predictions of its positive impact on business and private users have been made. Telecommunications firms are looking to invest billions in securing rights to the key areas of the radio spectrum allocated for such services,~1 but as deadlines for the deployment of more of this new technology approaches a number of potential EMC issues have been identified. This stems from the fact that 4G or long term evolution (LTE) telecommunications often uses frequency bands that are close to those already being utilised for other important technologies. Furthermore 4G, which will give improved broadband internet access and coverage to its users, often requires transmission at higher signal strengths than other services which may previously have used the designated bandwidths.
