Cellular phones and other communications equipment have recently Become very popular on a worldwide scale. Even though this equipment is growing smaller in size, its functions are becoming increasingly advanced. The memory back-up battery used inproducts such as these must be both small and high in energy density. We developed he ML621 (diameter 6.8 mm, height 2.l mm) and ML614 (diameter 6.8 mm, height 1.4 mm) in response to these requirements. We changed he thickness of the outer parts, variedthe electrolyte components, and optimized the cathode carbon conductor. This has enabled us to increase the energy density by 80% (ML614) or 26% (ML621) compared with the ML1220, which was previously our smallest cell, even bough the volume and weight ofthe new batteries are less than 1/3 hose of the ML1220.
