Like legendary "partners" throughout American history - such as Abbott and Costello,Ruth and Gehrig,and Fred and Ginger - machines and workplace noise are inextricably joined at the proverbial hip.Beginning with the Industrial Revolution of 1820 to 1870,mechanization boosted U.S.industrial output and economic development to unprecedented heights.It also cranked up the levels of hazardous noise with which workers had to contend.Many believe the danger to workers continues today,leading to noise-induced hearing loss among unsuspecting employees.
