Rule would ease exemption requirements for CMV drivers with controlled diabetes

Washington - A new proposed rule aims to reduce some of the red tape for commercial motor vehicle drivers who have controlled diabetes. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued a notice of proposed rulemaking in the May 4 Federal Register that would eliminate the requirement for drivers with stable, insulin-treated diabetes mellitus to obtain exemptions in order to work. Instead, FMCSA would allow such individuals to drive CMVs as long as they were cleared annually by a medical examiner listed in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
