Officials review status of hazmat transportation

James Oberstar (D-MN) on May 14 vowed to ensure that every aspect of the regulation for hazardous materials transportation is safe under his watch as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. During a hearing for the House Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee, Oberstar said some in the rail tank industry have proposed eliminating OSHA's jurisdiction over hazmat employees "under the guise" that the Department of Transportation and OSHA have conflicting or overlapping regulations. He said a committee investigation found no evidence that the existing jurisdictional structure poses issues to the industry, and suggested some in the industry would like to avoid OSHA regulations altogether.
