摘要

Washington - Even with workplace fatalities at an all-time low, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis recently announced her intent to continue "strong enforcement" of safety standards, asserting one death is one too many. On Aug. 20, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released preliminary figures showing a 9 percent decline in the number of on-the-job deaths from 2007 to 2008. A total of 5,057 worker deaths occurred in 2008. This is the lowest total since such data collection began in 1992; in 2007, 5,657 worker deaths were recorded.
