FADING TO BLACK: An Ontario hereford breeder continues his lonely puest for black Herefords

GARY MONTEITH believes he's onto something by spending years breeding black Heretords, but he's still waiting for them to get more respect. "To the best of my knowledge, there are no black Heretords anywhere," said Ron Wells, secretary manager of theOntario Hereford Association. "At least I'm not aware of any blacks that are registered in Canada. And in my 44 years of being in the Hereford Association, I am not aware of the breed ever attempting to add another colour for identification." Gary Monteith, who raises cattle near Shedden in Elgin County, started breeding black Herefords 20 years ago because he liked the look of them and noticed that they caught the judge's attention over that of other animals in the show ring.
