Cytidine diphosphate choline or citicoline is involved in cell membrane biosynthesis and hasbeen used to improve cognition, stroke rehabilitation and brain edema. Hepatic and renalmarkers were evaluated in Beagle dogs given citicoline. Seven beagle dogs were injected IV500mg and 1000mg per dog Citicoline every 12 hours in two courses of 15 days each with a14 day washout period in between. Blood samples were collected at the 16th and 45th dayfor hepatic and renal markers including ALP, ALT, AST, GGT, Random Bile Acid, LDH, TotalBillirubin, Direct Billirubin, Total Protein, Cholesterol, BUN, Cr and USG. There was nosignificant difference between the 2 doses of Citicoline except with ALT, ALP and randombile acid which increased in dogs given 1000mg but were still within normal range. Theresults should be interpreted with caution as the same dogs were given repeat treatmentsand ages ranged between 3 and 4 years. Results suggest that long-term usage of IV 1000mgevery 12 hours daily for 15 days in 3-4 yr old Beagles could have a potential to inducehepatic injuries.
