Sedation by intranasal (IN) and intramuscular midazolam (MDZ) andrecovery by IN and intramuscular flumazenil (FLU) in Lohman layers are described. Threegroups of 8 Lohmann layers each were administered 6mg/kg midazolam and/or 0.05mg/kg flumazenil by IN and leg or pectoral muscles. Sedation by IN and pectoral muscleroutes occurred sooner than through leg muscle injections. FLU neutralized sedation byMDZ in all birds. Response to stimulus factor in layers treated IN was shorter than in othergroups. Righting reflex was not affected by any route treatment reaching a maximumwithin 20 minutes. Heart rate in layers injected in leg muscles was less than other groupsand respiratory rate was reduced further by IN administration compared with other routes.Findings suggested that IN and pectoral muscle midazolam administrations to Lohmannlayers induced faster onset, but shorter sedation.
