Aujeszky's disease (AD) is one of the most important infectious diseases of swine. Disease control is often carried out by means of vaccination with marked (glycoprotein E (gE) deleted) vaccines. Usually, piglets are vaccinated by intramuscular routebetween 8 and 14 weeks of age, when most of them still have ADV-specific maternal antibodies. This could cause an interference with the development of active immunity. Intranasal vaccination is thought to be able to overcome, at least to some extend, this blocking effect, being thus a good alternative to the intramuscular route. It has been shown that vaccination against ADV by the intranasal route reduces the amount of virulent virus shedding, as well as the length of the viral excretion. These effects could be attributed to cell-mediated immunity. In this study the immune response to ADV was measured, comparing the intranasal and intramuscular routes of vaccination with a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine.
