A field expriment was conducted during kharif season of 1996-97 and 1997-98 on a silty loam soil to study the dry matter and nitrogen uptake pattern under different planting methods in rice grown under varying sources and levels of nitrogen. The transplanting method exhibited its superiority by recording highest value of leaf area index (LAI), dry matter accumulation and nitrogen uptake at each stage of the crop growth. Urea supergranule (USG) significantly increased the dry matter accumulation to the tune of 16.3 to 12.5 percent and nitrogen uptake by 19.2 to 15.4 percent for the period 60 to 120 days after sowing (DAS) over prilled area (PU) USG noted significantly higher values of LAI at all the growth stages over PU maximized at 100 DAS (5.29).Transplanting method and N-source through USG were found to be the best for improving yield.
