Gene action for yield, its components and some grain quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) were studied in nine parents F_2 diallel (excluding reciprocals). Five out of the nine parents were semi dwarf (90-115cm) suitable for cultivation in mid and low hills and four were intermediate (115-125cm). Gene action estimated through Hayman's (1954) approach revealed that both additive and non-additive gene actions but predominance of non-additive gene action for traits viz., plant height, days to 50%flowering, days to maturity, leaf area index, panicle length, 100 grain weight, and net-assimilation rate. Predominance of additive gene action was reported only for amylose content however; only dominant gene action was reported for grain yield, biological yield, harvest index, dry matter, grain length, grain breadth, grain length: breadth ratio and protein content. Proportion of dominant genes in the parent was higher for traits like grain yield, biological yield, harvest index, dry matter, 100 grainweight, net-assimilation rate, grain length, grain breadth, grain length: breadth ratio, protein content and amylose content. For the remaining traits, proportion of recessive genes in the parents was higher. Majority of the traits were mainly governedby non-additive gene action, which can be easily transferred through hybridization programmes.
