The Ni-Van workers have come to New Zealand under the RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employment) scheme, with Vanuatu the single largest participating country in the scheme. There are 2500 workers from Vanuatu harvesting pipfruit, grapes, kiwifruit and othercrops throughout New Zealand. The RSE workers come for a six month period to assist with thinning and harvesting; the scheme helps solve chronic labour shortages in horticultural industries, as well as enabling Pacific Islanders to bring home much needed cash to build a better life.Horticulture New Zealand national seasonal labour coordinator Jerf van Beek says many of those who have opted to return early were nearing the end of their time in New Zealand; less than 1% of the Ni-Van workforce in Hawke's Bay for the pipfruit harvesthave opted to return home. "I have been surprised at how few have decided to return."
