JOHN DAY (1824-1888) WAS AN eminent English orchid grower and collector whose career flourished from the early 1850s until the late 1880s. From 1862 ha not only grew orchids but also painted watercolors of the plants in his own collection at High Cross, Tottenham, and in other major collections in "and around London over a period of 25 years. More than 2,300 of Day's illustrations bound in 53 "scrapbooks" is a unique archive recording the beautiful orchids that were introduced into England from around the world over a period when oichidmania was at its zenith. The entire collection was bequeathed to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, by Emma Wolstenholme, his sister, in 1902, and now resides in Kew's Archives. A selection of these paintings was published in March 2004 as A Very-Victorian Passion: The Orchid Paintings oj John Day (Thames and Hudson).
