Tear resistance testing of tyres is difficult, time and money consuming or the results are not significant; but with a novel dynamic test method on basis of reasonable equipment costs and satisfying test efforts repeatable results - which are in line with practical experience - were determined. With statistical relevance slight differences of compounds can be predicted. Investigations in S-SBR/BR-, NR/BR- and NR-compounds show the potential of silica and/or carbon blacks to optimise tear resistance. For the green tyre compound highly dispersible silica evidences its benefit. For the NR/BR-blend and the NR-compound it is proved that a small addition of precipitated silica as filler improves the tear resistance significantly; this benefit becomes most evident when using high surface-active blacks.
