I MET CARL L. WITHNER, PHD, IN THE late 1960s when he contacted me at my business, Ruben In Orchids, to flask orchid seeds for him. He loved to self-pollinate species and observe the results. He understood the importance of selfing as a taxonomic tool. Withner always believed that if a species is pure, very little variation would result from the selfing. If it is a hybrid or if introgression has occurred, then a good picture of what is in the background can be observed from a selfing.
