A TOTAL OF 31,382 PHALAENOPSIS hybrids have been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society up to June of 2013. Most of the breeding of Phalaenopsis orchids is focused on improving the number of flowers, length of the inflorescences, flower sizeand the color and pattern of flowers, including characteristics such as lines, spots, picotees and various combinations of mottling and shading. Attempts to significantly change the shape of the floral parts are relatively rare except for peloric petals. The recent big-lipped Phalaenopsis hybrids could become a leading fashion trend of future moth orchid hybrids.
